Project Overview: Seattle Residence Guardrail Project

The Seattle Residence project demonstrates the precision and craftsmanship that American Railworks brings to every build. Designed to deliver both safety and style, this custom aluminum guardrail system is the perfect blend of durability, functionality, and modern aesthetics.

Our client wanted a railing solution that would match the architectural character of their home while providing privacy and a low-maintenance, long-lasting structure. To achieve this, we designed and installed a custom aluminum guardrail system with picket infill, complemented by custom privacy posts. The handrails were finished with a 2×1 profile and powder-coated in RAL 9005 black, giving the project a timeless, sleek appearance.

Design & Material Selection

At the Seattle Residence, every element was selected with purpose. Aluminum was chosen as the main framework material for its exceptional durability and resistance to the Pacific Northwest’s wet, variable climate. Unlike steel, aluminum won’t rust, making it ideal for a long-term installation in Seattle’s rainy environment.

The picket infill provides a classic, structured look while meeting safety standards and maintaining visibility. The vertical lines of the pickets enhance the home’s modern architecture, offering clean symmetry and a balanced visual flow.

One standout design choice was the inclusion of custom privacy posts. While the posts were fabricated and installed by American Railworks, the homeowner opted to handle the wooden infill themselves. This created a unique, collaborative approach to the project, allowing the client to personalize the privacy element while relying on our team for the precision-engineered metal framework.

For the handrails, we utilized a 2×1 profile for both comfort and visual definition. This proportion offers a substantial feel underhand without being bulky, maintaining a refined appearance across the entire guardrail system. The finish — RAL 9005 powder-coated black — provides a bold, high-contrast accent that complements both modern and traditional exterior palettes. Powder coating not only achieves a beautiful, uniform color but also adds a layer of protection against weathering, scratches, and fading.

Craftsmanship & Installation

The installation process for the Seattle Residence required meticulous attention to detail. Every post, picket, and handrail was measured and cut for a perfect fit, ensuring both structural integrity and visual alignment. The privacy posts were strategically placed to support the homeowner’s planned wooden infill, maintaining consistent spacing and symmetry across the design.

During fabrication, our team ensured that the welds were clean and strong, and that all surfaces were prepared for optimal powder coating adhesion. This step is crucial in preventing premature wear and maintaining the crisp black finish for years to come.

The installation took into account the home’s existing architectural lines, terrain, and any necessary adjustments for optimal safety and code compliance. As with every American Railworks project, precision and quality were the top priorities.

Meeting the Client’s Vision

One of the unique aspects of this build was how it balanced the client’s desire for a customized privacy feature with our ability to deliver a fully engineered guardrail system. By designing the privacy posts to integrate seamlessly with the homeowner’s wooden infill, we created a versatile structure that met their functional needs while allowing for personal design expression.

The black RAL 9005 finish was an intentional choice — not only for its modern, elegant appearance, but also because it serves as a neutral anchor for the natural tones of the planned wooden panels. The result is a railing system that feels like a cohesive part of the home’s design rather than an add-on.

Final Result

The finished Seattle Residence guardrail system delivers on every front: safety, durability, and style. The combination of aluminum framework, picket infill, and privacy-ready posts creates a functional yet visually appealing barrier that will stand the test of time.

The sleek black finish offers a timeless look that complements the home’s exterior while contrasting beautifully with natural wood accents. This project reflects the American Railworks commitment to precision fabrication, expert installation, and customer-focused design.

From concept to completion, the Seattle Residence demonstrates how a thoughtfully designed railing system can elevate both the appearance and functionality of a home.

Mounting Details for Deck Railings

When it comes to installing deck railings, you have two popular options: surface mounts and fascia mounts. Whether you prefer a versatile and reliable solution or a polished and sophisticated appearance, both options ensure the safety and durability of your deck railing.

surface mount

Surface Mount

Surface mounts are a popular option for installing deck railings. They provide a secure and stable attachment to the surface of your deck, ensuring the safety and durability of your railing. With surface mounts, there is no need for complex drilling or intrusive installation methods.

fascia mount

Fascia Mount

Fascia mounts are another popular option for installing deck railings. Unlike surface mounts, fascia mounts attach directly to the fascia board of your deck, providing a clean and seamless look. This mounting method is ideal for decks with limited space or those that require a more integrated and streamlined appearance.
